This month as part of our series introducing the DJSC team we happily introduce you to the main man behind the outfit – Allan Cross. Allan has been a DJ In Cornwall for 15 years and in this time has built a successful DJ business with the highest Google ratings in Cornwall.
Introducing the DJ behind DJ Services Cornwall
Last month you met Leon who is the newest member of the DJSC team. This month we turn our focus on DJ Allan Cross who is the founding partner of DJSC and has had a long and illustrious career in event management, the army and as a wedding DJ in Cornwall.
When you book a wedding DJ with DJ Services Cornwall, you get Al or Leon and no-one else. We are proud to operate our business in this way and we feel it’s the right approach to providing you with the best experience on your wedding night. Unlike some DJs that over-book and pass the job on to someone else we can maintain the highest standards because the buck stops with us.
Allan’s approach to standards and building his reputation has been many years in the making from his earlier days in the military. We will cover this in more detail in a separate post coming shortly.
Questions for DJ Allan Cross
For how long have you been a DJ In Cornwall?
I have been DJing for 15 Years
What did you do before that?
I had my own events company NWF Events, which coordinated and delivered the National Watersports Festival for 13 years and the Clacton Beach & Sea Festival. Before this, I was a serving member of the Armed Forces (Army). I spent most of my time serving within the Royal Logistics Corps.
Roughly how many gigs have you done?
With Festivals & Weddings plus various other events, over 1000.
What wedding that you have DJ’d at really stood out and why?
It was over 18 months ago in Newquay; what I love the most is the overall performance! The music, with the quality sophisticated lighting, creates the perfect atmosphere and jaw-dropping performance. They requested and played the genres of music I like personally, like EDM, and we provided our premium lighting and audio alongside what was then our new laser package. It was a stunning overall performance, and Leon and I did a stunning job!
What is your favourite venue?
We are pleased with so many beautiful venues in Cornwall however if forced to pick one, it would be the Mediterranean Biome at The Eden Project. It is such a large expanse of area, and with all the plants and trees lit up with venue up-lighting, it looks fantastic. Also, with the shape of the inner domed roof, any light which reflects like stars, is incredible to witness.
What are your most popular music requests?
As we mainly play at weddings, there is always such a diversity of ages; however, tracks like Mr Brightside, Sandstorm, and Dare I Say Abba are the classics that most couples want to hear at their wedding party celebrations. However, we tailor the music to the client’s requirements.
Have you ever had to save a wedding at the last minute if something went wrong?
Yes, you can have technical issues from time to time. However, we have various backup solutions if things go drastically wrong. But the event that stands out as saving the day would be when I received a phone call to ask if we had availability for that evening, as their DJ had let them down. I drove to Devon 2 hrs away, set up and played for the last 2 hours of the wedding party.
What do you love most about being a wedding DJ?
Well firstly we love weddings, even though we offer a service, we feel more like one of those attending the wedding as guests. Weddings are all about glamour; we love contributing to the big day and delivering a performance that is second to none.
What advice would you give to aspiring DJs?
Every day is a school day, so you are always learning either your skills or new technology. Embrace it and follow your dream.
What do you like about your partnership with Leon?
The reason why Leon is a partner of the business is simple: he is conscientious, loyal, reliable and committed 100% to DJ Services Cornwall. He is about as close as they come as a trained civilian with no military experience who understands that mission failure is not an option; failing to prepare is preparing to fail, and backup solutions are essential, as spares are. Plus, he is always willing to accept guidance, keen to develop personally and professionally, and loves what we do. We are a good team with very high standards, and it’s good he understands my humour. The bottom line is that he tolerates me.
And finally, if you could describe your style as a DJ in a few words?
Dynamic, versatile, engaging, personalised, and memorable.
Thanks Al for taking the time to answer my questions, it’s been a blast hearing more about your background.
